Parkers Back And A Rose For Emily Analysis - 1245 Words
Narrative Point of View in ââ¬Å"Parkerââ¬â¢s Backâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A Rose For Emilyâ⬠An authorââ¬â¢s use of narrative point of view has a significant impact on the presentation and interpretation of a text. The choice of a first-person narrative, for instance, will create a viewpoint that is substantially different in comparison to a third-person narrative. In ââ¬Å"Parkerââ¬â¢s Back,â⬠Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor uses a third-person limited point of view. Faulknerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"A Rose For Emilyâ⬠employs a first person point of view. In ââ¬Å"Parkerââ¬â¢s Back,â⬠the third-person limited narrative allows the author to take an objective, analytical view of Parker that allows the reader to understand the protagonistââ¬â¢s psychology; in ââ¬Å"A Rose For Emily,â⬠the readerââ¬â¢s knowledge of Miss Emily isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the same way that the eyes of the tattoo make Parker feel ââ¬Å"transparent,â⬠the third perso n limited narration also makes Parker transparent to the reader by allowing the reader to access Parkerââ¬â¢s thoughts and feelings. Parker likes to maintain control over what is seen and known about him; this is clear in the fact that all of his previous tattoos have been on the front of his body: ââ¬Å"He had no desire for one anywhere he could not readily see it himselfâ⬠(Kennedy and Gioia 430). On a more abstract level, Parker keeps his real name a secret and goes only by his initials; his first real act of intimacy with Sarah Ruth is to share his name: Obadiah Elihue. The third person limited point of view, therefore, allows the reader to do what both the eyes of Christ in the tattoo and Parkerââ¬â¢s wife do: to see Parker as he really is, not as he pretends to be. In contrast to the third person limited point of view in ââ¬Å"Parkerââ¬â¢s Back,â⬠the point of view in ââ¬Å"A Rose For Emilyâ⬠is the first person. The narratorââ¬â¢s exact identity; the first line refers to ââ¬Å"our whole town,â⬠implying that s/he is a towns person and neighbor. In fact, the narrator is never specified as one, single person; the pronouns ââ¬Å"ourâ⬠and ââ¬Å"weâ⬠seem to indicate that the narrator consists of several people, or even the town as a collective whole. Media presents us with many types of negative messages. Mass media tells us how we should look and behave in society. Adds in the media sell more than product they are selling an image. Violence is persuasive and now a troubling aspect of the new world. Media shows us that women need to have the newest trends and ultra-thin bodies to be considered beautiful in society. It tells us that the most important thing is our image. Jean Kilbourne talks about how the image of woman has changed so much over the last twenty years. Womanââ¬â¢s bodies havenââ¬â¢t changed what changed is the ideal body. Media creates a climate where there is a wide spread of violence against woman. Most kids cringe at the thought of making this huge step in life. For many students this transition can be a time of mixed emotions. Having been through this experience, I will compare and contrast the two, hoping that this will give you a clear picture of elementary and middle school. Elementary and middle school have distinguishable characteristics. In elementary schools, you basically have your homeroom teacher and one other teacher. The movement of students is very limited and you are mostly escorted by a teacher. Teachers are more understanding and are not as demanding because of the studentââ¬â¢s age. Fun days are set aside as an award for students that have done what is expected of them. Most of the children are placed in classroom with the same students each year. Elementary is the main point of delivery, it introduces social skills, behavioral adjustments, and basic academic learning. Middle school prepares students for higher education. Ultimately, middle school bridges the gap between elementary and high school. It is definitely a different experience than elementary, but it prepares students for their future and encourages them to be more independent. Elementary schools and middle schools also have common qualities. They are both open Monday through Friday on the same days. Each day students eat lunch at a designated time. All students are expected to sit in desks in an appropriate manner. Teachers require students to be respectful and display good behavior at all times. Homework is given on a daily basis and class discussions are routine also. School is essentially school with minor differences. Each school level has its own proââ¬â¢s and conââ¬â¢s, they are also very similar. They each have their own benefiting factors and they are used to their advantage. School systems up this way because it is initially what works in our culture. Elementary and middle schools are stepping stones that that help us get from one place to another in our academic life. Each level is an important standpoint for academic excellence and they should be taken seriously so that you can be an effective student/learner.
